World’s First L-ACOUSTICS K2 Arena Sound System
Installed at Toyota Center in Houston
Toyota Center, the arena home of the NBA Houston Rockets, reaches world class status with the addition of a brand new L-ACOUSTICS K2 sound system installation. This amazing achievement is the first K2 system permanently installed in a major professional sports arena.
The sound system installation was performed by LD Systems in conjunction with design project consultant Wrightson, Johnson, Haddon & Williams and with support from the L-ACOUSTICS US Applications team. Primarily comprised of 72 K2 variable-curvature WST line-source enclosures divided into six clusters of 12 enclosures each, the installation was completed and tuned just in time for the start of the NBA season. Due to exceptional flexibility and range, the new K2 speaker system is also potentially available to compliment visiting top concert artists and touring performances for many years to come.
K2 has proven to be the solution for myriad unique situations at installed-sound projects, and Toyota Center proved to be no exception. Thanks to K2’s ten-degree inter-cabinet angling, combined power and throw, the design allowed the use of fewer boxes to achieve seamless precise coverage throughout the arena. This benefit also allowed the LD Systems install team to use many of the existing rigging points that had been used to support the old trap-box-style system allowing for a visually unique openness in the area.
The sound system is driven by 29 LA8 and two LA4 amplified controllers mounted into custom audio racks. 18 K1-SB flyable high-power subs are hung in arrays of three behind each cluster to extend and reinforce the low-end frequencies adding power and punch. Court sidelines and center court downfill coverage was obtained by aiming six ARCS WIDE constant-curvature WST line-source enclosures and four 12XTi high-performance coaxial speakers.
LD Systems is excited to be a part of Houston Toyota Center history, and we are looking forward to the multitude of great sounding events to come.
