LD Systems uses a variety of programs to create
stage designs, lighting designs, and virtual environments. The main
program used by 3D artist, Scott Justis, is AutoDesk 3ds Max 2010.
This program can import and export AutoCAD files, perform full ray-traced
single frame and animated renderings, and simulate effects commonly
used in the concert, theater and corporate event industries. Support
software includes Corel Draw, Corel Photopaint, AutoCAD,
WYSIWYG, MAGIX Movie Edit Pro 15Plus, and SmartSound.
The advantages to using this event design
approach are many and include:
- Exploring the logistics of integrating
light, video, effects and even audio elements in show design to eliminate surprises during load-in.
- Creating a simulated environment that 2D illustrations cannot duplicate.
- Relating differing options to costs to ensure return on investment.
- Showing different stakeholders of a project (decorators, facility
managers, etc.) how the different elements of an event will affect
each other.
- Applying marketing elements (logos, colors, branding ghuidelines) into the set.
Below are a few samples of what the software can achieve.

Because the computer draws to scale, the proposed sets are guaranteed
to fit the venue space.
This rendering combines site footage of Eleanor Tinsley Park in
Houston with the proposed stage.

In this rendering the large ultrawidescreen projection image is
shown with the decor elements.

This rendering was used to show the unusual piano-shaped banquet
tables.

This series of computer renders
shows the lighting options for the final set. Clients are able
to approve set looks and options without worrying about what
the final outcome will be. The venue in this series is the Hilton
Americas Houston Hotel. The carpet patterns are taken right
from the architect's design and the ceiling details come from
the AutoCAD design. So, this is the truest representation possible
outside of actually setting up the set and taking pictures.
See the event photos here.
Besides the set look, other details the client made decisions
on included projection screen size, chair cover color, room
configuration, and stage decor. What does this mean for you?
It means knowing what you are getting for your money. It means
no surprises come show time. It also means getting higher approval
if need be and getting others excited about the event.
